Black Butterflies Series
Sista Sista is a piece depicting two Black sisters with heads as black butterflies.
It incorporates two colors of the same style shirt, representing being from the same origin but with distinct identities. Through this painting, the viewer will also notice a “Not For Sale” tag and a wax seal with an adinkra symbol for freedom and independence.
During slavery, wax seals were used on documents to signify a formal transaction of enslaved people, often to specific plantation owners. Sisters were usually separated and may have never seen each other again. Here these sisters are together and free, as they should have always been.
